Dept of Electrical and Computer Engineering

M.Sc. (Electrical Engineering)
In addition to undergraduate teaching, the Department offers evening courses leading to the degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering. The M.Sc. programme is structured around lectures and end-of-semester examinations. Candidates may opt for part-time or full-time study.

A candidate may read for an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering or an M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering with a major, i.e. an area of specialisation.

The majors available are as follows:

  1. Automation and Control Engineering
  2. Communications Engineering
  3. Computer Engineering
  4. Data Storage
  5. Microelectronics
  6. Power Engineering
  7. Wireless Communications

Whether or not a major is taken, a candidate may offer projects in lieu of M.Sc. modules. If a candidate opts for a project, he/she has to propose a suitable project and find an appropriate supervisor. The Department does not have a list of projects. The candidate's experience and expertise in his/her workplace should help to identify a suitable project.

There are 3 types of projects (only one of these types can be taken):

Type 1: Independent Study Modules, EE5001/EE5002 (equivalent to one M.Sc. module)
Type 2: EE Project, EE5003 (equivalent to two M.Sc. modules)
Type 3: Dissertation, EE5990 (equivalent to four M.Sc. modules). If a major is taken, EE5990 must be in the same area as the major.

Some modules have prerequisites. It is the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the prerequisite requirements are met. Likewise, if a major is taken, the candidate has to ensure that the requirements for this major are satisfied.

Please refer to the list of postgraduate modules and the requirements for each of the majors as given. Please note that the requirements for each major as listed here are 'new' requirements which are applicable to candidates who enter the M.Sc programme this semester. Please retain them for reference throughout your candidature. The requirements for each major for candidates who entered the M.Sc programme in earlier intakes have been given to them. These 'old' requirements apply to them even if they take a major in later semesters.

Candidates are asked to note that some modules are offered in Semester I and others in Semester 2, as indicated in the time-table for each semester. However, due to various constraints, some modules may not be offered at all in any particular year. Candidates should note this in planning their study programme.

Candidates should also note that the final composition of M.Sc. modules propose by them is subject to approval, as it must always reflect a degree in Electrical Engineering.
