| The Department offers two research degrees,
Master of Engineering (M. Eng.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.). These higher degrees are
awarded on the basis of independent but supervised research in a topic, culminating in the
submission of a thesis. In addition, M. Eng. and Ph. D. candidates must pass an oral
examination as the subject matter of thesis and a number of prescribed graduate courses.
With an aim to better equip and prepare graduate students for their entrance into the industry upon graduation, as well as, creating a local pool of talent for the industry, students pursuing Ph.D. programme are also allowed to opt for the Industrial Track Ph.D. programme. The department runs Industrial Track Ph.D. programmes with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing, Ericsson and Siemens. The normal entry requirement for admission as a Master of Engineering candidate is a good bachelor's degree. For admission as a Doctor of Philosophy candidate, a Master's degree is normally required. In both cases, the candidate must show the ability to pursue research in the proposed field of advanced study. For
the M. Eng. degree, the period of candidature ranges from 1 to 3 years, while that for
the Ph. D. degree ranges from 2 to 5 years.
